about

tofusmell is the project from the bedroom of 22 year-old musician Rae Chen (he/they). Inspired by 90s indie-folk music and Rae's own 2012 emo phase, the artsy acoustic sounds of tofusmell originals speak to Rae's life as a trans, queer POC. Rae uses poetry influences in his emotive lyricism to comment on themes like gender, religion, and love. Each stirring track is written, recorded, and produced in Rae's Orlando bedroom solely by him (with a MacBook and a single microphone).

Rae says “‘Shower Song’ is about how it's impossible for me to have a shower that doesn't, in some way, feel like some sort of ritualistic examination of my body. Not necessarily critical, but there is always an undeniable attention to my body in relation to my gender. The song is pretty straight forward in describing a scene of me in the shower, looking down at myself and imagining the water rolling down along a silhouette that better reflects how I wish to be seen.“

lyrics

I could see the sun blurring
through the window in the shower.
Watched a Thursday blur into Thursday evening.
I imagine water pouring
and rolling straight down.
In some parallel plane my chest is boring.

I’m obsessed on every detail
and turning myself inward and forward.
A body wanting more than just a frame
to ruin my first name.

(I could see the sun
staring, stain me in the window,
skin casting a glow
branding all good things invisible.
I could see the sun,
standing, spilling through the window
skin begging to go.
why are all good things invisible?)

I could see the sun blurring
through the window in the shower,
watched a Thursday blur into Thursday evening.
I imagine water pouring
and rolling straight down.

Inward and forward,
a body wanting more than
blurring and pouring;
a body worth ignoring.
Inward and forward,
a body wanting more than
blurring and pouring;
a body that is boring.
